Kerrisdale Village Seasonal Window Contest Yields Tie

The judges bundled up for a two hour browse along the Avenues and side streets of Kerrisdale Village last week, to take in the view. Mugs of Starbucks hot chocolate in hand along with a few Moore's Bakery sugar cookies to sustain them, Film Maker Sam Trounce and Floral Designer Jessica Clark paused at each and every window and considered their artistic content. In the end though, the decision was difficult with so many worthy contenders, the top prize was split between HOBBS gift store on West 41st Avenue and Pierre's Antiques on West Boulevard. Both stores are previous winners. Coming in a close second for light displays were 4 Cats Art Studio and Suvai Restaurant. Special mention to The Bank of Montreal for their colourful swags and bobbles at a prominent Village corner.

The winners were presented with a gift box from Benton Brothers Fine Cheese by KBA third term President Colin Holyk. Seen above are Pierre St-Denis, owner of Pierre's Antiques and Marty Van Kessel (blue tie), long term Hobbs employee who designed the winning window.

Snow Removal in the Kerrisdale Business District

As the winter season approaches it is timely to review snow removal rules for business district sidewalks. To be clear, business owners should know that they are responsible to clear the sidewalk in front of their building of snow

and ice by 10 am as this is a City of Vancouver By-law. More importantly, by keeping on top of the shoveling and de-icing, you keep your business accessible for loyal neighbourhood patrons who rely on nearby services.

No one could remember a more perfect day for Kerrisdale Days - hot, sunny and not a whisper of wind in the air. Hundreds of people turned out for end of season sales, horse & carriage rides, loads of free entertainment for young and old alike, and the ever popular 7th Annual Kerrisdale Idol Contest.

Two enormous cream-filled cakes were delivered to the hub of activities at 3 pm sharp where KBA President Colin Holyk was joined by MP Joyce Murray and City Councilor Suzanne Anton in cutting the confection marking the business district's 106th birthday.

After a day filled with 30 singing auditions the judges finally decided from a field of seven finalists, that local participant Matt Pauls would be this year's winner taking home the coveted $1,000 in prize money. KBA Window Contest Winner

The intrepid KBA Window Contest judges steeled themselves against torrents of rain and wind to pass judgment on all street-side windows in Kerrisdale December 8th and they were not disappointed. Classics Antiques, located at 5685 West Boulevard, was the run-away-winner with a delightful motif of a variety of white bird cages, lights and other decorations proving once again that small and stylish can compete with bigger canvasses.

"As soon as I saw these rusty bird cages at a yard sale last summer I knew what my holiday window would be," said owner and operator Pierre St. Denis. "I am thrilled with this delicious prize from Benton Brothers Fine Cheese."

Second term KBA President Colin Holyk was on hand to congratulate Pierre and present him with his delectable gift.

Other windows that caught the judges' eye were Nestings (last year's winner), Hill's of Kerrisdale and the Bank of Montreal.

Kirsten Kwong, seen in the photo above, presented the judges with an irresistible winning package as she wrote her own original score and sang while accompanying herself on the guitar.

The five runners-up all received $100 gift certificates donated by the Hills of Kerrisdale clothing store and can come back next year to compete for the big prize.

Judges this year included up-and-coming Director Sam Trounce, TV Producer Erin Shaw, Jessie Award winner Ryan Beil and Talent Time creator and producer Paul Anthony.

Kerrisdale Holiday Window Contest Winner Announced

Each year the Kerrisdale Business Association encourages businesses to dress up their store fronts for the season of lights. To promote the area and get folks in a festive mood the KBA sponsors a Window Contest. This year the judges took their 2 hour walk on one of the coldest nights of the year with hot chocolate in one hand and a sharp pencil in the other to keep track of all potential contenders.

In the end it was unanimously agreed that a new business to the area, Nestings, had the most beautiful display. This fashionable children’s shop, features all the items required to feather the nest of new arrivals. Taking this theme a step further they designed one window in shades of blue and the other in pink, including lights. The end result is lovely and could compete with any stylish shop on New York’s Madison Avenue.

Pictured above is KBA President Colin Holyk (Kerrisdale Pharmacy) with Nestings employees Sherry Jeffery and Yann Berube. The window design was created by store Manager Tracy Pederson. We are sure that store owners JJ Scott and Deanna Aquilini are very proud of their most creative “flock”!
