Pooch Poetry Praises Pets

Kerrisdale’s Third Annual Pooch Poetry Contest was a huge success with Dan Ezekiel taking home the Top Dog prize with the following “rap” poetry piece. A good time was had by all the contestants and their beautiful gaggle of dogs!!!

Well here I am, I’m a Jack Russell cross,
I ain’t that big but I act like the boss,
I came from a shelter up in northern BC,
Because my first owner was so mean to me.

Flew down to the city feeling down on my luck,
But was adopted by a family with a Ford Escape truck,
A nice house in Kerrisdale on the west side of Van,
I was just seven weeks when my new life began.

My big sista emma is a furry maltipoo,
We became fast friends, now we’re stuck like glue.
Took me a while to stop peeing indoors,
I even took a bite out of the basement floor.

Now I’m four years old, I’m young and I’m strong,
I’m not that tall but I’m really really long,
I can run like the wind and I hardly ever bark,
My favourite place to play is the Fraser River Park.

I lick everybody, and I love a nice meal,
Been skunked four times, and I can ride a snowmobile,
I like to chase squirrels and I’ll gnaw on a bone,
I shed like crazy and I don’t like to be alone.

Sometimes it’s true I give my parents grief,
‘Cause I am the neighborhood’s local ball thief,
I’ve been to Tofino, one day again maybe,
And I am protective of our family’s new baby.

My tail goes up when I’m having lots of fun,
I love other dogs and laying in the sun,
I jump up and down just like a kangaroo,
Put me on a leash and it’s me walking you.

I can climb up a mountain and bound through the snow,
But sometimes I am scared of my own shadow,
I’m named for a famous television tough guy,
I’m the one and I’m the only -- Thomas Magnum, PI.

Snow Removal in the Kerrisdale Business District

The recent snowy weather took many businesses by surprise, especially those new ones who have not experienced such extreme weather before. To be clear, business owners should know that they are responsible to clear the sidewalk in front of their building of snow and ice by 10 am as this is a City of Vancouver By-law. More importantly, by keeping on top of the shoveling and de-icing, you keep your business accessible for loyal neighbourhood patrons who rely on nearby services.

For more information on snow removal rules and regulations go to www.vancouver.ca

Benton Brothers Take First Prize In Kerrisdale Window Contest

Every year the Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) sponsors a Christmas Window Contest within the Village of Kerrisdale, one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods. This year’s winner is the relatively new kids on the block store - Benton Brothers. Owned and operated by Andrew and Jonah Benton, these two young Professional Engineers turned cheese mongers, gave credit for the window’s thoughtful and nostalgic design to their Mother who helped put it all together. The judging team was very impressed with the many nuances of the window mixing family traditions with aspects of the products sold at the shop. It’s best viewed at night.

Seen above is KBA President Leo Franken presenting the brothers Benton with an all expenses paid stay at The Fairmont Chateau Whistler. The KBA thanks BCAA’s Nina Grimshaw and the Fairmont Chateau Whistler for their generous contributions to the contest.

The next, best two windows that impressed the judges were the ones at Hobbs gift store, owned by Brent Beattie and Thomas Hobbs, featuring winter wonderland owls and Lilikiks spotlighting 1950s records masquerading as decorations in non-traditional holiday colours of tangerine and fuchsia .

All three of the businesses cited for their lovely and or edgy windows are owner operated and can only be found in Kerrisdale Village!

Poodle Picked for Poetry

Kerrisdale's second annual pooch Poetry Contest was won by local resident Katherine Schultz with her delightful, original verse about her Standard Poodle, "Dulcie". Top prize was the coveted Kerrisdale "Top Dog" collar for 2008 and a doggy food canister filled with a wide selection of canine treasures sponsored by the Kerrisdale Business Association and Fetch, a Kerrisdale Village store catering to dogs.

Read the winning poem below!

Now Kerrisdale dogs are the pick of the pack
And everyone knows, it's simply a fact
There the best looking dogs you ever have seen
AND Duclie the poodle is the Kerrisdale Queen

She meets with her friends on a Saturday morn
For a stroll through the neighbourhood where they were born
And there favourite places they visit each time
To support all the merchants by spending a dime

How they may go to Starbucks for a specialty latte
And then on to Purdy's for a peppermint pattie
And the people all smile as they see her pass by
With all of her friends 'neath a Kerrisdale sky

They all do their banking at Kerrisdale banks
And they're all so polite and always bark "thanks'
And the people all laugh as they give them a look
As they go to the library to borrow a book.

Other districts may boast of their canine population
But Kerrisdale dogs are the cream of creation
They are kind, they are gentle, and ever so keen
And Dulcie the Poodle's the Kerrisdale Queen!

Hobbs Wins Kerrisdale Holiday Window Contest

Kerrisdale Business Association President Leo Franken seen here is flanked by the owners of Hobbs - Tom Hobbs (left) and Brent Beattie (right). The stylishly decorated Hobbs window won the 2nd Annual KBA Holiday Window contest which was selected by Kerrisdale Idol judges Tara Hungerford and Eric Hogan, both with extensive backgrounds in set design, video & film production and marketing.

President Franken presented the winners with a prize package courtesy the Fairmont Chateau Whistler (featuring one night free accommodation with meals included), BCAA Kerrisdale Branch (who assembled all the prizes), the Kerrisdale Business Association and AAA Horse & Carriage.

When asked about his window design, Beattie shared his winning philosophy. "Decorating the window inside, mixing eclectic pieces with classic ones, is a great start. But equally important is extending the decoration to "outside" the window with lights and greenery. It doesn't take much to impart the spirit of the holidays and it's always good for business."

Second runner up this year was the beautiful Hill's of Kerrisdale window and next in line came Sweet e's, last year's window winner.

Kerrisdale is a great place to window shop, especially in the evening, during the holidays with its bedecked swags and curling LED lights decorating every lamp post.

Congratulations to all KBA members who helped make Kerrisdale one of the most seasonally beautiful shopping areas in Vancouver.

Constable Ray Gardner is Citizen of the Year!

The highlight of this year's Annual General Meeting for the Kerrisdale Business Association was the presentation of the Citizen of The Year Plaque. For the first time in their long history the KBA went outside of their association to honour the Kerrisdale Community Policeman in the area, Constable Ray Gardner. KBA Beautification Committee Chair Brent Beattie told the audience that Ray Gardner exemplified all the best of what the Vancouver Police Department represents. He went on to cite the many issues that Constable Gardner has helped resolve during his short time on the beat in the Village of Kerrisdale.

"Too often we only hear about the police in negative connotations and that's just not a true representation of the facts. Ray in particular and the VPD in general, do an outstanding job and it's our pleasure to tell him tonight how much we appreciate his dedication to the work", Beattie went on to say before presenting Constable Gardner with a special plaque.

Third Time Lucky for Kerrisdale's New Idol

Andrew Conroy reigned supreme this year on his third try for the annual $1,000 Kerrisdale Idol prize. An accomplished guitarist, Andrew writes much of his own material which paid off big time this year.

The competition was stiff with over 30 contestants offering singing skills from opera to rock to folk music. Every age was represented with many singers traveling to Kerrisdale Village from the far reaches of the Lower Mainland.

Over three hundred people took in the varied performances with thunderous applause for each and every entrant. A wonderful day in one of Vancouver's greatest neighbourhoods!

Sweet e's, Kerrisdale's charming confection shop located at 2032 West 41st Avenue, has won the BIA's contest for best holiday window display. The Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) invited member businesses and shops to create evocative, colourful and bright window displays this year as part of a district wide contest. Sweet e's added colour, lights and even animation to their diminutive window creating a charming scene, especially for evening strollers.

The KBA's Beautification Chair, Brent Beattie (Hobbs) judged the contest and said, "Sweet e's employed all the right touches: colour, light, creativity and animation. So even though this is a relatively small window, it has a big impact. We hope other Kerrisdale businesses will be inspired by this effort as it contributes so positively to the ambience of the shopping area."

On December 13th Kerrisdale Business Association President Ross Hill presented Sweet e's owners with the Window Contest Prize which was two nights free accommodation at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler along with a great package of extras, all put together by Kerrisdale's BCAA store.

Congratulations to all KBA members who helped make Kerrisdale one of the most seasonally beautiful shoppping areas in Vancouver.

Celebrate the Season of Seasons in Kerrisdale!

As the holiday season approaches we reflect on the very good year we have passed together in our Business Improvement Area. It may be difficult to remember under a rainy November sky, but sunny, dry weather made for a pristine summer where the KBA’s Music Under the Clock Saturday concert series offered a full schedule without one cancellation. This was followed by our annual late August blow-out, Kerrisdale Days, which found the main stage Kerrisdale Idol contest even more popular than its premier year in 2005.

Now the season of seasons nears and your business association has a great line-up of free events for Kerrisdale patrons, neighbours and visitors alike. Click on the poster art to check out the holiday highlights!

All the usual ingredients that go into our time-honoured recipe for the village’s birthday party will be back to help make the last full weekend of August a fitting close to the summer season.

Free horse & carriage rides, clowning, face painting, children’s amusement rides, inflatable slides and live music will bring the streets to life, especially on Saturday, August 26th when we pray for sunny skies pull out all the stops.

Kerrisdale Idol - It's Back!
Get in the spotlight on Saturday, August 26th
Sign up starts at 8:30am under the clock at Yew St. & 41st
Performances will be held from 11am - 4pm

Back for a repeat performance will be a Kerrisdale Idol singing competition where three opinionated and well-known judges will rate the first come first served performers at the north Yew Street and West 41st Avenue street end.

Last year’s performers were stupendous and most of us could not remember a better time or better way to pay homage to the end of summer. Ads describing the free competition will run in the Courier newspaper for three weeks leading up to the big day when early risers can sign up on site to be heard later that day under a big white tent for all passersby to hear. The top three winners will receive a cash prize and publicity in the next Village Voice newsletter.

Kerrisdale Business Association Supports
Point Grey School's Track Fundraiser

June 8, 2006

It was announced yesterday that the Kerrisdale Business Association Board of Director's approved a donation of $10,000, from their legacy fund, toward a proposed new rubberized running track at Point Grey Secondary School. Association President Ross Hill spoke on behalf of the KBA when he said, "This donation will be good for the community of Kerrisdale and the young people from all over Vancouver who come here to participate in a variety of sports. Our youth are our future, and this new field's rubberized track will be a first for the city. It's just another way to encourage active living for all users, many who call Kerrisdale home".

Mr. Hill went on to say that the precurser to the KBA, the Kerrisdale Commercial Associaiton, had left a substantial legacy fund when it disbanded for worthy community capital improvements. He reminded KBA Board Members that Kerrisdale is fortunate to have a cluster of excellent neighbourhood facilities within its boundaries including elementary and secondary schools, an arena, community centre, seniors' centre, indoor pool and library.

"In the final analysis", Mr. Hill smiled, "all these facilities make Kerrisdale Village a great shopping destination."

The Kerrisdale Business Association's mandate is to foster good will in the community, promote the business area, contribute towards a safe, well-planned attractive and friendly environment and to increase the public awareness of Kerrisdale.

Kerrisdale’s Carnival Days Community Parade
Join Us on April 28th & 29th!

The Village of Kerrisdale will celebrate the rites of spring when the Kerrisdale Business Association sponsors the annual Carnival Days Celebration and Community Parade on Friday, April 28th and Saturday, April 29th. Not only will all the charming shops and services in Kerrisdale offer their traditional sidewalk sales, but free entertainment will abound especially on the big day - April 29th.

On Friday, sidewalk sales throughout the Kerrisdale Business District, between Maple and Larch Streets along West 41st Avenue and from 39th to 42nd Avenues along West Boulevard, will reign supreme with post season bargains and reduced price gifts just waiting to be snapped up giving smart shoppers the jump on the best deals in town. Also on tap will be roving entertainers and music makers.

Saturday’s event will kick off with the best little community parade in Vancouver at 10 am featuring the Westside’s Little League teams, Pets On Parade, antique cars, marching bands and a plethora of community groups and recreational teams. A giant inflatable slide sponsored by Provident Security will be perfect for children bent on sliding out of the arms of school and into the promise of summer. Back for its biannual gig will be the popular Merry-Go-Swing offering free rides to cool-off the younger set.

Join in the Barn Dance!
A sporty tent and stage featuring a fiddler, piano and “caller” will teach all comers the basic steps to traditional reels and jigs where even the uninitiated can join in the fun. Think “Brokeback Mountain” meets Kerrisdale Fashionista! The main stage will be erected on the closed-off portion of Yew Street just north of West 41st Avenue. Join in the dance or just chew on a bit of straw as you sit on hay bales.

And what would any Carnival Days be without free horse & carriage rides (located right by the clock) from 11 am - 4pm and our great Hot Dog stand where all-beef wieners can be bought with all funds going to Kerrisdale’s beautification program.

All this and a bevy of bands, free balloons, magicians and face painters make a grand start to spring, a Vancouver tradition not to be missed and hugely enjoyed by all who participate.

What says summer more than lazing around one of Vancouver’s nicest “hoods”, flip flops on your feet and sunscreen on your face as live music wafts through the golden light?

Kerrisdale’s Music Under the Clock casually presents some of Vancouver’s up-and-coming bright musical lights while still being able to attract those artists who have gone on to greater melodic glory. Stop by to hear a song or two or make it an afternoon where you can eat your take out lunch on an elegant teak bench while listening to anew brand of music every summer Saturday. Weather permiting, we hope to see you there from late June to Labour Day weekend!

Kerrisdale Days
Thursday, Friday and Saturday
August 24, 25 & 26, 12 noon - 4 pm
(most of the entertainment happens Saturday)

What can we say that hasn’t been said before about this end of summer sidewalk sale to end all others? This is when all the merchants pull out the stops to “clear the decks” of the year’s merchandise before the autumn goods arrive. Many a smart Kerrisdale shopper has tucked away just the right purchases for Christmas gifts a few months down the road. Add to this the usual free entertainment, rides & slides for kids and the ever-popular Kerrisdale Idol contest and you have a special event worthy of only the best shopping districts. And don’t forget the cake! Plenty of free layer cake, deliciously concocted by Moore’s Bakery, is every sweet tooth’s afternoon piece de resistance when at 3 pm we all celebrate Kerrisdale’s birthday. You won’t want to miss this annual event!
